Famous Bakery Shop

Flury's is one of the most popular bakery shop of Kolkata. Their special sandwich is awesome. It is available in three types. Three layered veg club sandwich and three layered non vegetarian club sandwich and the other one is original open swiss sandwich with shredded chicken, ham, tomato, cheese. Coupes are also available. They say those are available since 1927 and is kind of heritage item.

Poor Imitation

Flurys is much more than a confectionery shop. It is a part of Calcutta's culture and history. Many a love story has been woven in this 'shop. But ever since it was renovated few years ago, Flurys has lost most of its old world charm. The pastries and other goodies have become very expensive and flavour has taken a dip.The effort to recreate it like a Venetian tea shop falls flat.

Going to this place every time is living the history of the city. Old style decor and yumm pastries makes everything perfect. Love this place for its cookies and chocs.

Deteriorating Day By Day

The inexhaustible menu has everything from english style breakfast to exotic desserts and cake varieties. There are sandwiches, grills, pastas and salads of your choice. The chocolates and pastries are to die for.
Although, it is an authentic restaurant reminiscent of the 30's, my only quibble is that the place should be Wifi enabled and they should be open till late.

Experience Flurys

Reasons to visit Flurys -
The Heritage factor | Located on Park Street | The beautiful Interiors | Its a Must Visit if you are in Calcutta

The food is not much to my liking. Pastries are very english style and not suited to my palate. They serve nice breakfast too, but I won't say its the best you can get.

However, I would go there again and again not for the food but just for the "Sake of being there" and "enjoying life pass by" on Park Street and soak in the beauty of Flurys.

I particularly revel the experience of having coffee here at 3.30 am on 25th December. It was the "place to be" on Christmas.

Come here for the experience. It is worth it.

The European style confectionary

Flury''s has been one of the most elegant looking confectionaries in Kolkata. Their cookies and chocolates are amazingly delicious and you may not find something similar in any other shop. This place is also visited by many foreigners as well as the local population. The interiors are very beautiful and the chandeliar place in the centre adds a touch of royalty to th entire setting.

a feel good environment

The Flurys is widely known for its breads and confectionaries, but it is best known for its breakfast selections, which is very popular, as a matter of fact there is a waiting of up to one hour during breakfast hours at weekends and holidays. It has been a benchmark in tearoom / confectionaries. It is famous for its iconic butter cream and rich chocolate desserts and bakes and it has to be famous as it is really yummy. Though a bit expensive but a delite for the people with sweet tooth.

Almond Pretzel [Almond NG]

Today, 11/01/13, I was at the Spencers Hyper - South City Mall on Prince Anwar Shah Road, and purchased an Almond Pretzel from the Flurys counter. I was shocked to find that it was dry tasteless and stiff, and needed at least 5/6 cups of tea to get it down. It is shocking that the pastry from such a reputable name as Flurys was such a huge disappointment and discredited the name and quality of Flurys. I went for quality and what I got was a dry stiff tasteless pastry, which I regretted buying. Never again. I would not recommend anyone to try this. This was purchased under Sale No. 94 4/11493, card no. 2028784(8).

Breakfast at Flurys

Flurys is famous as an eatery from the British era, one which has maintained its Anglo-Indian charm. I have hardly been there while growing up in Kolkata. I had heard a lot about it, passed by it every time I crossed Park Street and even been there once or twice. My personal opinion was the place is more about the charm and heritage and the spread of the menu rather than the actual taste of the food. But this visit of mine even made me a fan. I may not be craving for the food, but I would love to go back again and again, just for the charm of the place. Sharing my experience at my blog http://thebongfoodie.blogspot.in/2012/11/catching-up-over-breakfast-at-flurys.html

Overprice mediocrity

Went there to have a nice coffee break in the evening. I knew beforehand that Flury's is a bit expensive but I was in the mood to spend that extra bit to get a nice coffee and snacks with some difference and of course, a good cafe like ambience. Now the ambience was good indeed with an old style, elite cafe like atmosphere inside, overlooking the lively Park Street outside. But unfortunately, the dominant feeling I came out with was that I was fleeced. The coffee, tea (both above 100 bucks) and omelette (about 350 bucks, that too you would not be given all the toppings mentioned in the menu. You had to select 2 or 3 from them) that was served to us brought back fond memories of all the chais and coffees I have had at roadside tea stalls, office canteens over numerous adda sessions. Only that they were at least 20 times cheaper or free. My mind was playing games and was telling me that there must be something special about the food here and you got to concentrate hard to find it. But I failed in doing so and left the place feeling robbed. Like a typical desi, I thought I'll use up as many sugar sachets to sweeten my beverage and probably pocket the rest. But even the sugar sachets were all soggy inside and the sugar fell in clumps. When I pay so much at any place I expect some difference. Maybe even in things which do not matter much like more glossy menus, stylish cutlery, high quality tissues, classy waiters etc. But everything was very very ordinary.

Overall - nothing bad as such. Go there if you don't mind spending a lot for ordinary stuff served within a nice ambience. Disclaimer - I haven't tried their famous pastries or Sunday breakfast.

Those were the days when people swore by Flurys. My last experience was quite disappointing. Only a couple of weeks ago my friend and I decided to meet at Flurys. I was the first one to arrive. I found a table to the left of the entrance, away from the window. The place was absolutely dirty. There were mosquitoes hovering over the table. The staff was absolutely carefree and 'I don't care' types. Although they did get me a different table but, the first sight had completely turned me off. Cleanliness is one of the most important factors and we don't expect Flurys to take it so casually.

The Elite Face of Kolkata!

If you are a Calcuttan having a special knack for quality food and cakes, this is a spot that should head your to-do list. Located at the heart of the city, Flurys brings in the best of confectioneries in town and a sweet beginning to your day. Park Street is characterized by the Flurys store which spins in a wave of elite grace. People from all over the world flock in right from the early hours of the morning to enlighten their souls. As far as we are concerned, Christmas last year was probably Fluricious to say the least. The Yummy chocolate cakes and coffee made our day. It was just that the shortage of 'capital' stopped us in our way to salvation. It's a MUST MUST MUST MUST visit for any personnel - Kolkatan or Non-Kolkatan.

Tad costly, but enthralling experience

The terms park street and flurys go hand in hand. True to its reputation of being the confectionary hub of Kolkata , flurys did please my taste buds to a great extent. The ambience was fantastic too. But it surely digs a whole in the pocket. With that amount of money, I can enjoy more pastries elsewhere (But, not as good).

Good but....overpriced..hyped..!

Like any other tourist in Kol, this place also was in my must-visit list. You may have to wait for a while for the entry but, once you get in, all that wait looks worth it. Good ambience, lights, aroma of coffee and other delicacies, soothing atmosphere and comfortable sitting make this place almost perfect to have heritage Kol feeling! English bfast, veg club sandwich, hot coffee and deserts recommended! But, a little overpriced, I think. In Mumbai, on similar concepts, Candies (Bandra W) and Theobroma (Colaba) are much better and hence, strongly recommended.

Overrated..but good! :)

This IS a kolkata institution, and I went there, again with my parents. The pastries were quite tasty, but hey..you get this sort of thing at 1/3 rd the price, at other confectioneries. The ambiance was really good, sort of old-kol feel to it! You have a view of Park Street, which is really nice.

Crap desserts and Overrated

Had heard that this place is an institution of sorts in Kolkata so went one evening with my family to this place to try the bakery items here. We ordered an assortment - peach danish, chocolate cube, cappucino pastry and tiramisu and it was a HUGE let down. I have had real tiramisu abroad and the one these guys prepare comes nowhere close to the flavor and the actual dessert which is Tiramisu - it was like a plain vanilla cake with a hint of lemon. Cappucino pastry did not have any cappucino or coffee flavor which you would expect. The chocolate cube was actually stale and the icing was too low-grade, not what you would be expecting as a chocolate delight (Places like Coffee Day actually do justice to what you can call chocolate). Coming to Peach Danish - this was the only item which was decent out of all that we ordered, but unfortunately these guys do not know that these sort of items should be slightly warmed in microwave before being served to bring out better taste.

You can get much better desserts in other places than this highly expensive and worthless place. Their menu card gives prices as if it is a 5-star place, but the desserts won't even qualify as 2-star. In terms of ambience and location, this is a nice one though. Service is also alright. Overall experience - would never ever go back and would not advise any dessert loving person to visit either. You can go only if you do not mind spending for nothing.

First Choice

One place that I heard as a must visit place before i came to Kolkata was Flurys, and it has truly proved why people call it a must visit place.
Its an amazing place to be at, hang out with friends, have a business meeting, chill out and have world class confectioneries, its a must go place.
i haven't yet tried the breakfast, but will try it sooner or later.
A little high on pocket but you get the best there.
The ambience is nice and classy.
Loved being there in will be there again.

Good Ol' Flurys

We wanted to catch the breakfast at Flurys but because of some prior work we ended up there at lunch time. We asked for the brunch but they were only serving lunch. My partner and I took the window seat and liked the quiet inside because of the less number of people on a weekday afternoon.

Both my partner and I laid our eyes on the Honey mustard chicken preparation but one of us ordered that while the other ordered a grilled chicken steak. I also ordered hot chocolate which i loved while my friend ordered a coke. The honey mustard chicken was the best steak i ever ate. The interiors of Flurys has the old english feel.
The bill came around 1k. This place is heavy on the pocket but the food and ambiance is worth it :)

Childhood Memories

Flurys was always one of my must visit places in Kolkata since childhood. But off late something seems to have gone amiss.

I wish I could point it out. But the charm of Flurys is no longer there. Maybe the current generation like it, but as a part of a family who has patronised Flury's since it began, I was not satisfied.

Nothing Spectacular!!!

Went their for deserts and were dismayed at the waiting. Anyways after a 15 minute wait we entered a dining area that was a mix of confused shawl clad people and pretentious 'deserters' who conducted themselves as members of Tollygunge.
Ordered the classic English style Tuna Sandwich that was strictly average along with a poached peach sundae that had a name a la elle-helle. That was good.
Must mention about a waiter who swerved his hands in a weird manner doing anything... from serving water to even cutlery. The kinds that make u smile :)

Lesser than Expected

When you hear about the five generation legacy of flurys, it raises expectations. When I came to Kolkata, this was the first place I tried. The place looked very stylish, and is certified for it by the MTv Style Award. But sadly, the actual food did not live up to the reputation. The baked goods were average at the most. I tried most things on their confectionery counter, but all of them disappointed.
However, the rest of the food was okay. The omelets were nice. For the overall feel of the place, it is worth a try.

Flurry's breakfast lives upto its reuptation

I had always heard about the famous Flurys breakfast. Having spent 3 years in Kolkata and not going once for that fabled breakfast looked like a crime to me. So on a beautiful Sunday morning four of us went for the Sunday Breakfast. Unfortunately lazy that we are we reached at around 9:30am for the breakfast. Didnt expect to stand in a queue to enter the place for breakfast. But had to stand for half an hour for a place. Just shows how popular the place is for breakfast. It definitely raised our expectation.

I always review a restaurant not on the food alone but on the overall experience which includes service and ambience of the place.

Having been to many top of the class restaurants in the city, I expected the service to be top class. Somehow the service was not upto our expectation. The things that put us off are the torn menu cards, dirty tables that took some time and few repeated requests to be cleaned, the chairs upholstery that needed cleaning. One thing was obvious that maintenance was not high on thier priority list.

Coming to food, it was good. No complains about that. The food was visually and gastronomically appealing. The glass window gave a splendid view of the empty Park Street soaked in overnight rain. The whole ambience - the view outside, the food and the interior decor lifted our mood.

Overall the price is definitely on the higher side. Rs 150 + for an omlette is really high. But I would still prefer to pay that amount for the overall experience. Do go there for the a lazy Sunday breakfast and you would not be disappointed

The Generational Touch

It is almost impossible to miss this eatery on Park Street with its tall glass windows through which you can see the entire restaurant. It has got some really nice pastas on offer. I personally love their Lasagna. Service is usually a little slow but the food usually makes up for it. Don't leave once your done with your meal. Go to the pastry counter and try their wide selection of pastries. They are the ones you have heard of but really tasty. You can pack some too to take back home

Over priced food in a stuffy place

The interiors look chic, the grub sells for that's what the firangs love to tuck in for better choice. The price is overwhelming for the nonsense which goes in the name of say, sandwiches. Better fare available in other places. & be a little observant and order the solo sausage or bacon plate: you'll get three thin sausages undercooked or two burnt bacon pieces.
Flury's is to Kolkata what Statesman has become for us: a haunt for the old and the middle-aged. Period.
Don't let the suave English fool you about the flies which sometimes come to taste your grub.

Breakfast of Champions?

If you are one of those guys who feels like having this elaborate continental breakfast every now and then, make sure you try out this place at least once. Plus it's a great way to just relax right on Park Street. For people starting their day late, worry not if you can't make it to this place early in the morning, coz they serve it all day! The "All Day Breakfast" they serve has 2 slices of toast, one fried egg, 2 strips of bacon, some sausage and a hash brown, surely a great way to start your day! And the food is good, really good. The make some mean omelets as well. The service was decent and we got our food in good time. The bakery right next dishes out some sweet stuff as well, the cakes especially are too good. I found the place to be a bit overpriced though, but what the hell, it was kinda worth it.

Flurys have always been a classic joint. From the ambiance to the food that were served, everything was top notch. But sadly not anymore. At my recent visit to the place, somethings were very wrong.

1. The service was extremely slow as we had to call a waiter at five times till he showed up.

2. The items on the menu looked unspiring.

3. The dish we finally ordered was tasteless and cold. It felt like it was 5 days old.

4. The coffee they served had absolutely no flavour.

But one must give due credit to what was good. The cakes and chocolates were just brilliant. It was so good that I had to pack some for my family as well.

I sincerely hope that they will get the standard of their food and service back to the top class way it used to be.

Rushing in during the rains with a flury...

Staying just down the road, was a favorite on sundays, when lazily get up, wander down the road, pickup magazines & then settle down in the flury's (was not as plush as the renovated one) but lovely omlettes, thick slices of bread; shakes, coffee, & on the way out pick up some veg pattice; cakes....

And some day when it was raining, just sit & watch park street going by!!! Ah those were the days.

CAUTION! They send receipts!

I had ordered a cake for my mom's birthday recently. Everything arrived on time (cake and bouquet) and so did the receipt! The bakery was thoughtful enough to remind my mom how much I had spent on her birthday! When my family "signed the receipt" for the order which I had already paid for, believe me I had the most depressing 10 minutes of my life.
