On a Sunday afternoon, when you've had a long schmooze and you wake up and feel hungry, what do you do? Head up to Between Breads, a small, luscious, sandwich joint in the bylanes of Bandra, which has been around a few months, and fast gaining word of mouth to drive the crowds in droves.
Yesterday, I managed to get seating only the second time here, and there are another two times I've arrived and departed in 30 seconds because there is a lot of traffic at this 15 seater eatery, and you can't always find space. No hard feelings though, everyone got to get an opportunity to enjoy their burgers every once in a while ;) Chatting with one of the owners, they are planning to establish another kitchen in Bandra to be able to offer home delivery soon, and after that the plan is to go to Andheri.
Now to the food, I've never went back feeling the need for more food from this place. The portions are massive and satiating. Its a 20 item or so menu, and like I've always said, small outlets got to specialise, make some good food and offer limited menus. So I appreciate it that they are playing to their strength here, which is to get succulent meats and convert it into nice sandwiches, without the bother of having to remember how to make a zillion kinds of them.
My preference here, is to go for the Chef's Sandwiches or for the classics. After all, that is where the innovation or the execution of the classic recipes would show. Yesterday, we went with the Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich and The Morning After, complete with some Bacon Fries and Ice tea on the side.
The Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich first. It came in a Multi-grain Baguette bread, and apart from the beef which was diced fine and done well, it had some pretty nice caramelized onions and roasted bell peppers, which you could take a nice 30-45 minutes to eat and converse over. This came with a portion of potato wafers on the side. The best part about this sandwich, was that the hot tastes were intermingled with the tangy tastes that the peppers and bbq sauce were supposed to provide. When you can taste the various ingredients separately, its a job well done.
The Morning After next. It should be classified in the club sandwich category, but with a difference. It comes in a toasted baguette again (but a non-multigrain one), and had all the ingredients of a nice club s/w inside: bacon, ham, fried egg, tomatoes... along with a garlic sauce, and... French fries. Hey, I am already thinking when can someone make a nice french fries sandwich for me (with some sauces inside, but nothing else)
The bacon fries were, well, french fries, made in Bacon stock, and had Bacon bits interspersed, they were yummy, but the plastic forks we got along to eat 'em were not so strong though ;)
I still have to give a try to the 10 ounce Bacon Cheeseburger, and see if they are a contest with some of the other biggies in town who do it in a gourmet setting, but I'm sure they won't disappoint.
Do plan to visit off the regular dining hours, and you should get space easily, else be prepared to wait 5-15 minutes to get a table. enjoy your meats, because if you're here, you've earned it.
